Teppanyaki style restaurant based in Wakefield centre offering the experience to dine at the Chef’s Table and have your food prepared and cooked fresh in front of you. A real fun and mesmerising dining experience worth trying! Overall rating – 9/10.
As part of my birthday celebrations this year, I dined at Hokkaido based in Wakefield, and had a really good evening trying some fabulous food and experiencing dining Teppanyaki-style! We were booked as part of the Chef’s table experience that evening, which was a Wednesday so the restaurant was fairly quiet, with just 8 of us dining. I had heard from quite a few people though that they’d visited this restaurant and they really enjoyed the food and Chef’s experience here so it does come highly recommended.
You get the choice of 4 set “Chef’s Tasting Menus” (including one Vegetarian menu) for the Chef’s table, prices ranging from £23.90 – £29.90 per person. I hadn’t been to a Teppanyaki restaurant before and really enjoyed the experience. You not only get the chance to see how the skilled Chef prepares your food, cooked and served right in front of you, but the food itself is so delicious and it’s a bit of a fun and social way of dining. I definitely want to visit more Teppanyaki restaurants as a result of this, and maybe next time I’ll be braver with the catching of the fried egg haha!
We went with Tasting Menu One which consisted of;
Mushroom, Onion & Courgette
Salmon Fillet – with spring onion, soy sauce and lemon juice
Tiger Prawns – cooked in a delicious homemade seafood sauce
Sirloin Steak Warps – with garlic and mushroom flake, with spring onions, wrapped in thin slices of sirloin steak drizzled with soy
Teriyaki Chicken Thighs – diced chicken thighs, cooked in homemade sticky teriyaki sauce topped with sesame seeds
Egg Fried Rice & Beansprouts – with carrots and spring onions
Fillet Steak – Flambeed in brandy topped with garlic flakes
Our favourite dishes of the meal were the Tiger Prawns which were cooked in such a tasty, tangy sauce with lots of ginger and garlic – these were really mouth-watering, and the Flambeed Steak which finished off the whole meal very nicely. Watching the Chef cut the ingredients and present them is mesmerising, especially when he flambees the steak, and then chopping the fried egg making you catch a piece in your mouth provides a few laughs! We didn’t leave enough room for dessert although there was an amazing looking chocolate dessert that I almost regretted not ordering.
Service here was decent, the décor and surroundings were fine although nothing memorable, it was all about the food and dining experience here.
The restaurant also offers an A La Carte Menu with Appetisers such as Dumplings, Tempura Prawns, Chicken Thighs etc with prices ranging from £4.50 – £7.90. Teppanyaki
Mains consist of Steak Wraps, Duck, Lamb, Squid & Lobster and more with prices starting from £10.50 upwards. A Sushi Menu is also available. To learn more about the food on offer and the restaurant, visit their website here.
