450 Above – Wickersley, Rotherham (Now Closed)

Independent Restaurant serving quality, delicious British food in a creative, modern way. We thoroughly enjoyed the food here, smashing through 3 courses each and bread to start! Every course looked and tasted amazing and was a clear reflection of the chef’s talent and passion for serving quality food.

450 Above themselves describe their restaurant as minimalist, their emphasis on customer’s enjoying a lovely evening of quality, creative and tasty food and it is exactly that. The entrance to the restaurant is up an outer staircase, above a row of takeaways/shops along Bawtry Road in Wickersley, Rotherham. Walking into the venue, we were greeted by friendly staff who seated us in a waiting area of velvet chairs and glass mirror tables, with a menu to choose our food from and took our drinks order. There is a small bar area however the venue is table service only. The restaurant emphasises that this is not a lively bar but a quieter restaurant enabling customers to enjoy and concentrate on their food. The dining area is minimalist with leather chairs and wooden tables and some wall art. Initially I felt that there was more to be done on the decor, however now, understanding how superb the food is here, I can see how that is their main focus, and not the surroundings.

We were served freshly made sourdough & focaccia bread with in-house matured cultured butter and dipping oil. The bread was warm and delicious and this was a great complimentary start to the meal.

Our starters; I went with the special of Burrata with Castlefranco & Grilled Pink Radicchio leaves, a sherry vinegar and orange dressing. The burrata was beautiful and creamy and the whole dish was really fresh and light with a citrusy finish. A great portion size for a starter, I really enjoyed this. Ben chose the Scallops with Peanut & Gochujang sauce, pickled chillies and spring onion. The scallops were cooked beautifully and the thai curry based flavours from the accompanying ingredients was really good.

Our main courses; A tough choice to make as all of the meat dishes sounded fantastic, but I finally went with the Lamb, that was served pink as it should be, and was cooked perfectly. This came with Rolled Lamb shoulder, peas and purple sprouting broccoli. The rolled lamb shoulder was so tender it melted in the mouth and was full of flavour. All of the elements of the dish came together really well. This dish didn’t need any sides it is great how it is. Ben chose the Beef Hanger Steak dish (medium rare of course), which came with Ox cheek & roast onion pithivier (an enclosed puff pastry pie), goats cheese mousse, smoked potato terrine & pickled celery. Every ingredient of this meal was cooked to perfection and was mouth-wateringly good. Both courses were so appealing to the eye too, which only added the whole dining experience.

At this stage we were so full but I could not miss out on such a high quality dessert. Again the choices I was given made it difficult to narrow down but I decided to go with the White Chocolate Bavarois, Rum infused brioche, white chocolate soil & Dark & Stormy Gel. I didn’t get much of the flavour of rum in the brioche but this was served warm and alongside all elements, was a really unique and delightful dessert. Our server could tell that I had struggled to narrow down my choice of dessert as the Carrot Cake also sounded amazing, so they kindly gifted me a portion of this to try, and I am so grateful that they did. This came with whipped cream cheese, malted white chocolate sorbet and small shards of salted caramel brittle – a bit like a deconstructed carrot cake. This dessert ended up being my favourite of the 2. The carrot cake was so scrumptious and I loved the sweet pieces of brittle, really delicious.

We washed the food down with some gifted drinks of Poretti & Souvingon Blanc Our server was really friendly and welcoming and ensured our evening was enjoyed, with the chef presenting superb, top quality food in the background. We were really impressed by the food served here and we will be returning more than once. I highly recommend all food lovers in the South Yorkshire area to give this restaurant a visit.
