Ayubowan, translating to “welcome” in Sri Lankan, is also the name of a street food kitchen who serve up authentic Sri Lankan street food across Yorkshire & Crewe, and I was kindly invited to try their food at their Sheffield spot. Residing in one of Sheffield’s city centre food halls, Sheffield Plate on Orchard Square, this type of food is a very good fit if you’re looking for fast food with flavour! [ad]
The chef was really welcoming (living up to the name), inviting me into the kitchen to see how things were done!

We enjoyed;
- Chicken Kothtu – a Sri Lanken street food market favourite. Shredded godamba roti stir fried with onion, garlic, carrot, medium spices & curry leaves, served with a fried egg on top. Choose from meat, prawn or jackfruit.
- Chicken & Prawn Devil & Rice – spicy with a hint of sweetness in a sticky sauce. Stir fried with onions, leeks, peppers and cooked with garlic, ginger & chilli paste.
- Paratha (Ve)
The food was very flavoursome and filling. Though the Devil’s rice sounds like it’s really spicy and we did explain that we love spicy food, the spice level wasn’t quite there BUT the portion was great with lots of bite to all the ingredients. The sauce was thick too, and had a sweetness to it – which you know is going to go down well with me. I found the Kothu actually a bit spicier and loved that it was more of a dry dish but still moist enough to scoop up with the Paratha. Flavour was on point and because of that and the portion sizes, we would definitely enjoy coming back for this food again.
