Sarto, Leeds City Centre

Rating: 4 out of 5.

An independent, casual pasta-focused restaurant based in Leeds City Centre serving delicious and fresh, handmade pasta. .

I recently visited Sarto, based near the bus station in Leeds Centre, on a weeknight and the place was really busy which was a good first sign. The restaurant has been brought to Leeds by the people behind Laynes Espresso and The Brunswick.

The restaurant is very casual with a bar in the middle and an open kitchen, the dining area being mainly bench tables and seats. The menu here isn’t vast, it focuses on quality flavours and ingredients. I’ll be honest I did have to google a few things on there not recognising the pasta shapes or names of cheeses & meats, but don’t let my lack of knowledge put you off, the food is delicious!!

For our Starters we tried the Pumpkin & Sage Arancino with Alioli which was a decent portion and full of flavour, and the Beetroot & Knockraich Crowdie (one of the things I had to google – a soft curd cheese) with Walnuts, Radish and Balsamic – I loved this dish as everything went so well together, it’s a fairly heavy portion for a starter but I ate every last bit. There are a selection of other Starters available as well as olives & bread to start, prices ranging between £3 – £8.

All Mains consist of pasta dishes.  We went with the Radiatori (spiral-like pasta shapes) with Pork & Nduja Ragu, topped with parmesan – a fairly simple dish with a decent kick to it, really yummy. They actually made more than needed for a normal portion, so gave us the extra, always a winner! We also tried the Rigatoni (large pasta tubes), Lamb Shoulder, Sheep Rustler and Mint, topped with parmesan – another tasty dish and very filling. Prices for pasta dishes range between £7 – £9.50.

Although the menu isn’t vast here, the food is simple but mouth-watering and real value for money. Check out their website here for more information. I would recommend anyone give this restaurant a try if you’re looking for tasty, in-expensive pasta within a casual and vibrant setting in Leeds.
