A gorgeous, top class country pub with modern décor and a fine dining feel, serving real comforting food. Overall rating: 8.5/10.
Recommended to me by a friend, The Black Bull Inn in Moulton near Richmond struck me by surprise as I expected an old-fashioned country pub but actually this is a very modern, open and stylish restaurant serving comforting, classic food with a bit of a fine dining feel to it. As the restaurant is based in North Yorkshire an hour away from my home, we decided to make a day of it and have a little walk around Richmond which was lovely, so I would recommend this too. A bit of architecture, market square, a small walk along the river and I’d definitely recommend a visit to the old Train Station that is now a hub of art, food & drink (we may have had a pre-dinner ice cream there hehe).

The Black Bull kindly fit us in for Sunday Lunch when I contacted them by email that morning. Unfortunately I haven’t visited them before or had the chance to try anything from the every day menu, however I can say what we tried from the Sunday Lunch menu was absolutely gorgeous.

Whilst you wait for your food, they serve fresh bread and oil which is always a nice touch. For starters I had the Soup of the Day – butternut squash and horseradish, topped with fried onions. DEEEELICIOUS! Jamie went for the souffle made with a selection of local cheeses. This was light and creamy and also very tasty. Safe to say we emptied our plates of the starters.

I was torn between going for a traditional roast dinner or the fish pie for main, but I decided to go with the roast dinner as these looked amazing. I went for the beef, served pink, and Jamie went for the pork, with crackling & stuffing. On Roast dinners are served as meat, roast potatoes and a Yorkshire pudding on the plate, with cauliflower cheese, red cabbage and other veg served on the side. The food was so delicious I wanted to keep eating it even though I knew I was full and the desserts sounded amazing. The red cabbage was especially good! As always because we had been impressed by the sound of the starters and then had a large main, there was no room left for dessert, but the desserts looked so good.

I would absolutely recommend trying the Sunday Dinner here. To check out their menus click here. Hopefully if I pass again, I’ll get to try their Indulgence of Chocolate & Peanut or Sticky Toffee Pudding Dessert.
