The Oak House Restaurant, Chapeltown – Sheffield (Takeaway & Dining In!)

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Situated in a building what was once The Royal Oak in Chapeltown, The Oak House Restaurant serves fine-dining food in a welcoming and relaxed environment. During Covid-19 the Restaurant is also offering collections as well as socially distanced dining in.

June 2020 – Finally, I can write reviews again haha! I am really missing being able to try new restaurants and review them for you. I didn’t really fancy regularly eating & reviewing local takeaways as I have tried to avoid eating lots of them. Yes there are quite a few restaurants doing collection only, but their prices are still the same. Plus they’ve mostly been in the city centre (a fair drive for us for pricey food when we have been cooking some really good meals ourselves) or they are only delivering via Deliveroo/UberEats which STILL doesn’t deliver to my post code yet!

Anyway rant over, The Oak House Restaurant in Chapeltown, Sheffield came to our rescue as they started to do collections just 2 weeks ago which look to have gone down very well due to the collection slots being fully booked both weeks. The Oak House are offering a selected Menu of 2 courses for £19 or 3 courses for £23, with a small Children’s Menu. Some of the dishes on the main menu are always available, and others are seasonal and change every so often, keeping it fresh. This restaurant had already been recommended to me a few times and with them just being around the corner from us in High Green we thought why not, lets treat ourselves to a bit of a date night, and we were not disappointed one bit!

The process from booking a slot to collection was really easy! The Oak House regularly update their Facebook page with slots available and the collection menu, so all we had to do was decide a time and message them via Facebook. We messaged the restaurant on Tuesday to see if our chosen slot on Friday was still available and got a response later that afternoon to say yes and all they needed was my number and my order by Thursday lunch time.  Payment is on collection and by cash or card.

Usually when eating out I end up filling up on a starter and a main then I regret not getting to try the desserts and I had seen the cheesecakes on The Oak House’s Facebook page and knew I had to try one. So we decided to go for sharing a starter and a dessert, and getting a different main meal each.

Meal ordered, I received a text Friday afternoon just to remind me of my collection and to go through where I needed to go and to be aware of social distancing as there were 2 collections per slot. I arrived at my slot time with 1 other person there but there were signs and plenty of space for us to wait. As I arrived our meal was just being brought out – perfect timing!

For our starter we went for the Honey Roast Chicken Wings – 3 large chicken wings, cooked really well in a lovely honey glaze and with a slight bit of spice. This was served with a pot of spicy mayo on the side, which was more than enough and so tasty I saved what we hadn’t had to have on our burgers the next day!

For my main I chose the Penne Pollo Piccante – pasta, spicy harissa chicken, creamy sauce, baby tomatoes and spinach. I chose this as I hadn’t seen harissa chicken on a pasta menu anywhere else before and I love it, and it was delicious! It had a real kick to it which was lovely as usually “spicy pasta” dishes actually lack spice. It was also topped with a roasted chilli giving it that bit more heat. Even though the meal was packed in a cardboard box for collection, it was still presented well, the portion size was just right and I really enjoyed it. I would eat it again.

We also tried the Lamb Rump (£2 supplement) with dauphinoise potatoes, black cabbage, mint marmalade and gravy. Every element of this dish again was presented well even in the collection box, was cooked to perfection (I LOVE lamb!!) and it all tasted amazing. We loved this dish and as everything else we tried, would absolutely eat it again.

Then the Toffee & Baileys Cheesecake, I mean look at it… Shame we had to share haha! But it was lovely. Surprisingly I am not big on cheesecake, so half the portion was just enough for me to really enjoy it without it being sickly, and it looked perfect as well.

We were really happy with our choice of collecting from the Oak House last weekend, and plan rto visit the restaurant when they open their doors again from the 4th July. I 100% recommend you to give this place a try, for collection (there may still be a few slots left for this weekend), and when it is back open to dine in!

Sep 2020 – After enjoying our takeaway from Oak House so much, we booked in to the Restaurant to dine, just as Sheffield went into Tier 3! The current restrictions didn’t spoil our experience at all and the restaurant is well-organised and ensuring social distancing guidelines are being followed.

This independent restaurant is a fairly small venue but still has about 10-12 tables, which were all full throughout our visit – great to see! Oak House don’t serve alcohol so they allow you to bring your own drinks and just charge a small corkage fee per person. Therefore we took one of our favourite bottles of red to share 🙂

This visit we decided just to stick to enjoying a main meal each and chose 2 meals different to what we had tried before, and different to each other so we could share.

I went with the Duck – Pan Fried Duck Breast, crispy new potatoes, seasonal vegetables, cherry sauce. Also seems I got the extra of the crispy onion salad, which I was obviously delighted with! This dish was absolutely delicious and there was surprisingly so much duck! Everything was cooked really well and we finished every last bit, I could have actually ordered it again to be honest it was that good.

Ben ordered the 8oz Ribeye Steak with chunky chips, homemade slaw, peppercorn sauce and crispy onion salad. Cooked medium-rare, the steak was really tender and juicy and along with everything else, was perfectly made and went down a treat.

We really enjoyed our food again at Oak House and the atmosphere and service was faultless and lovely too. We are proud to say we are calling this our “local” go to for occasions where we want to treat ourselves to some fine-dining.
