I was delighted to join the Northern Monk Refectory based in Leeds recently, on their brewery tour followed by some top-notch fodder from their debuting kitchen hosts York Roast Co. Overall rating – 10/10!
The Northern Monk Refectory is based on the first floor of the Old Flax Store and showcases the varied styles of beer brewed either on site, or at a site very close by. It has 16 keg and 2 cask lines, and the fridges are packed with fresh cans to takeaway. Although famous for it’s beer, Northern Monk also serves a selection of spirits and wines.
Our tour (totaling a group of approx 10 people) was hosted by the lovely Ted (pictured above) and started off with being served 2 selected beers from their core range, to take down to the ground floor where the brewing magic happens. In total the tour is approx 45 mins, costs £10pp and you should expect some history of Northern Monk, talking through brewing process showing you the various stages and machinery involved, some anecdotes and banter whilst sipping samples. Afterwards we returned upstairs to the bar and had our 3rd sample, an 11% stout which I surprisingly really enjoyed. I have to say I really enjoyed the tour and think it’s a little something fun and different to do!
Samples sipped we then had the chance to indulge in some of the gorgeous food from The York Roast Co. Every 3 months Northern Monk has a “kitchen takeover” from local food vendors and the current hosts for the Winter are The York Roast Co. who have been around since 2004 and with 4 other locations, are now giving the people of Leeds the chance to try their “viral sensation”; the YorkyPud Wrap, for a limited time only!
The Wraps and the Yorkshire Pudding Meals were recommended to us over the sandwiches – Good choice Ted! We were swiftly served our hot and very comforting meals, packed full of delicious ingredients. Great for this time of year, especially after a nice beer or two!
Yorkshire Pudding wrap filled with our meat choice of Pork, roasted vegetables, stuffing, gravy and came with a side of apple sauce.
Yorkshire Pudding meal; a large Yorkshire Pudding filled with our meat choice of Beef, roast potatoes, roasted vegetables, stuffing and lots of gravy, with a side of horseradish.
Sides – stuffing balls, pork crackling, and extra roast potatoes.
In summary, we had such a good evening and enjoyed the whole experience. Big shout out to Ted and the staff of Northern Monk who made us feel very welcome and ensured everyone had a great night. I couldn’t fault the service, the tour or the food and would recommend people to give both a try! For more information on the Brewery check out their website here.
If you don’t get the chance to visit The York Roast Co whilst they are in the Brewery, then make sure you check out one of their other locations as their food is delicious! See where else they are based on their website here.
Happy munching 🙂
