A lovely, inviting pub in Barugh Green that serves hearty portions of pub food at it’s best and has a great selection of beers & gins!
We decided to have a small drive out the other Sunday to Barnsley for a Roast Dinner at the Crown & Anchor, which was on my list after seeing that some of my friends had been recently and the food looked great.
It did not disappoint! Luckily even though we hadn’t booked and the restaurant area was full, they managed to squeeze us in at one of the tables in the bar area, which was more than fine with us.
I had my heart set on a Sunday Roast of which the choices were Sirloin, Pork Belly or Nut Roast. I went with my go-to roast meat of choice which is Pork (unless lamb is on the menu!!). My plate came piled high and everything was cooked well, it was great to see so many things on my plate – meat, mash, roasties, carrots, leeks, red cabbage (always a winner when this is on a roast dinner), Yorkshire Pud and all covered in gravy. The meat as it was belly pork, was a little fatty for me, but nevertheless I ate it all.

Ben decided to go with the pie as he does love a good pie, and a good one it was! In fact we came to find out later that week that this pub is actually known for it’s pies, they are award-winning even, so I may have to return to have one myself. He went with the steak and ale pie and enjoyed it a lot. A proper pie in proper pastry with lots of filling. This came with hand cut chips, which were pretty much massive chunks of potatoes a little like big roasties – lovely and fluffy in the middle, minted mushy peas and gravy.
In summary I would recommend this pub for food, especially a good Sunday dinner and I would advise you to book ahead to avoid disappointment 🙂 Find out more about the pub and view their menus here.
